Where the bay is

Bitez is a wide bay on the south coast of the Bodrum Peninsula, with Gümbet to the east and Ortakent to the west. Behind it lie mandarin groves and, up the slope, Bitez village. Bitez was a separate municipality until 2014 and is now a neighbourhood of Bodrum. In our family’s memory it was a natural harbour where fishing and sponge-diving boats took shelter. We tell their story in From Sponge Boats to Gulets.

Restaurants, beach clubs and piers line the shore. The bay is busy in summer and far quieter in winter.

Getting there

Two dolmuş (shared minibus) lines run from Bodrum bus station to Bitez. Line 2-48 goes via Konacık, the Bitez junction, the courthouse and Bitez village before coming down to the shore at Bitez Yalı. Line 2-49 (formerly 2-1A) runs past the Gümbet junction and the Ramada straight down to the beach. Fares depend on where you get on and off, and contactless bank cards are accepted. Timetables change with the season, so check the current line information from Bodrum bus station before you set off.

If you come by car, parking near the shore gets hard in summer, and arriving early helps. For directions, parking and taxis to our restaurant, see our directions page.

The rhythm of the day: morning, afternoon, blue hour

In the Aegean summer the northerly meltem, the Etesian winds, usually strengthens in the afternoon and eases towards evening. In Bitez, too, the calmest sea in summer is mostly in the morning. Mornings suit families with small children and anyone who wants a quiet swim.

The stronger afternoon wind also makes Bitez interesting for windsurfers. Wind forecast sites such as Windfinder keep a separate spot for Bitez. Checking the day’s forecast before heading out on the water is a good habit.

When the sun has set and the light turns blue, the bay goes quiet again. That is also the best hour at our tables.

When not to go

The bay is at its busiest around midday at weekends in July and August, when traffic and parking are at their worst too. For a quiet day choose a weekday morning, or come in May–June or September–October.

Windy afternoons are not the time to swim with small children or paddle out on inflatables. Never use inflatables when the wind is blowing offshore.
